You know you wanna dig in some dirt and get your hands dirty! And in the name of a local species, that's exactly what the Tatzoo Lange's Metalmark Butterfly team did. They led a restoration day out at the Antioch Dunes, pulling invasive plants and making the home of the Lange's Metalmark Butterfly a better place!
The team also participated in a butterfly count, to get accurate data on how many butterflies are living in the dunes. In 2011 there were only 32 adults seen last year.
As a culmination of all the actions taken to protect the critically endangered butterfly, the Tatzoo team hosted a butterfly kite festival at a public park in Antioch. This was a great way to involve the community and share knowledge about this beautiful creature that lives in their home town. They had a fun day full of kites, coffee, cookies, raffle prizes, kites, science and more!
